DELO MONOPOX Key Features

DELO’s adhesives are used to bond magnets into stator housings made of zinc-plated steel for electric motors. DELO MONOPOX one-part epoxies are especially suitable, due to the fact that they achieve very high bond strengths when used to join these two materials.

In addition, these adhesives give very high thermal resistance, in excess of 200°C. Because they also cure in thick layers, they have excellent gap-filling properties. For any temperature-sensitive components, some DELO MONOPOX adhesives can be cured at 60°C.

Increasingly, magnets used in electric motors are adhesive-bonded rather than using conventional mechanical joining methods. Using adhesives gives the advantage of evenly distributing stresses (rather than concentrating them on the mechanical joint), reducing vibration noise, increasing corrosion protection, and eliminating of component damage during the joining process.

DELO-ML anaerobic adhesives offer excellent thermal stability up to 220°C, excellent chemical resistance, tension-equalising properties, and an increased gap-filling capability over mechanical joints. Additionally, using a dual-cured anaerobic adhesive offers fast light-fixation on the visible part of the bond.

As displays become more prevalent in everyday life, from consumer electronics to automobiles to industrial plants, the use of adhesives has increased alongside this phenomenon. Instead of air-filling the gap under the top glass screen, adhesives are used instead, due to the fact that reflection is reduced by up to two-thirds when an adhesive is used instead of air.

Displays are used in a very diverse range of applications – mobile phones, tablets, bank machines, solar-powered parking meters,etc. The displays need to be easily read in all light conditions, and DELO’s liquid, optically-clear adhesives meet this requirement. They fill the gap between the top glass panel and the actual display, and help to reduce energy consumption as less energy is used for a display’s backlight brightness. Traditionally, when making shower enclosures, hinges are screwed into glass doors. This not only requires drilling holes into pre-stressed glass, but also requires large hinges that necessitate a mounting screw in addition to a presetting that compensates for tolerances. Adhesive-bonding with DELO PHOTOBOND adhesives is a reliable alternative to this laborious process.

These adhesives demonstrate very high strength and long-term durability. Their high moisture resistance and transparent colour make them perfect for bonds that must be visually appealing. Smaller tolerances are used in the design as there is no requirement for compensation of large tolerances. In addition, the shower enclosure is easier to clean as there is no need to wash around screw-heads!

The Chanel flagship store in Amsterdam has become an architectural highlight by replacing old brickwork with glass bricks! Aside from the obvious need for good bond strength, the two major requirements for adhesives in consumer wearables are peel resistance and a barrier to moisture. Electric motors are omnipresent in everyday life. Through technological advancements, they have become smaller and more efficient, creating new challenges for joining technology. Bonding provides numerous advantages in terms of production and operation, allowing engineers designing motors to choose from a wide range of adhesives. However, electric motors are not only used for emission-free driving, they are also found in window regulators and seat adjusters. In fact, they can be found everywhere – in electric bikes, in tools, even in our kitchens.

Manufacturers of efficient electric motors rely more and more on rare earth magnets. Since they are prone to corrosion, their surfaces are treated with a coating in the form of passivation, nickel plating, or epoxy resin plating. This coating may be damaged during assembly, openly exposing the magnets to direct environmental influences. Compared to conventional joining methods, bonding offers many advantages. It is a particularly suitable option for three steps in the assembly of electric motors: joining magnets and lamination stacks, joining shaft and rotor, and joining stator and housing. Adhesives not only compensate for higher manufacturing tolerances and prevent fretting corrosion or contact corrosion, but also provide impact resistance, which is essential to withstand the high dynamic forces of electric motors. Their vibration-damping characteristics reduce noise and provide acoustic improvement. Thanks to a homogeneous stress distribution, adhesives are able to compensate for thermal stress that may be generated due to different coefficients of thermal expansion between stator and housing. Their gap-filling properties help prevent slippage and play in the area of the shaft.

Adhesives for IC and sensor encapsulation in the automotive industry must withstand extreme chemical stresses and elevated temperatures from -65°C to +180°C.

When encapsulating bare ICs (a process sometimes known as chip-on-board, or COB), two options are used: A one-stage process called GlobTop for small-area encapsulation, where an adhesive with a tailored viscosity is dispensed onto the surface of the die. The controlled flowing behaviour of the adhesive results in a dome of adhesive that protects the IC and the wire bonds, and the adhesive is then heat-cured to harden the dome. When the encapsulation area is too large to use a GlobTop (because of the dome height), then a wall or Dam is dispensed around the IC using a high viscosity adhesive, and the interior is then Filled with a low viscosity version of the same adhesive. Two-part versions of the same adhesives are used to encapsulate whole PCB’s and the components assembled onto them. These adhesives offer long term protection against chemicals such as diesel, petrol and oils, and also against the temperature extremes seen during shipment and lifetime of the automobiles.
